Developments in the political arena can make anyone tremble. Looking at the development in the last few hours, it becomes apparent that, indeed, GMA will not escape this turbulent crises that the country is facing. According to an Inquirer columnist, GMA will be able to stay in power if and only if she is supported by the three most important sectors: the Church, the business sector and the military. Yesterday, it seems she had the support of all three. The developments today will surely hit GMA hard.
The Makati Business Club (I interned here last summer!) declared this morning at Manila Pen. that they are asking GMA to resign. While it may not represent the entire business community, the MBC is the premier business group in the country and their position will greatly boost the GMA Resign movement. After the MBC supported the Erap Resign movement in 2001, EDSA 2 happened.
The Church will issue their position this weekend. I hope that the good bishops will be guided by the Holy Spirit in making and in discerning for the right move. BTW, Fr. Huang told us at the forum last wednesday that the Jesuit stand and thus, the Ateneo stand, will be the same as the CBCP stand. The Jesuits believes in the collective wisdom of the princes of the Church.
While the military leadership may still be supportive of GMA, im not sure if that is so with the ordinary soldiers. but i pray that they don't take matters into their hands.
The Church position, i think, will be a crucial one. It will tip the balance of power in the current situation. If the Church asks her to resign, i think she will be forced to do so.
But in the face of all of this, whats scary is the warnings issued by leaders in the South. Davao's Duterte is already warning that if Imperial Manila ousts GMA through another People Power, Davao and other provinces in the south will secede. From the looks of it, we cannot take this lightly. He is boasting that they already have a flag, an anthem and $500 million in dollar reserves. While im not sure if our brothers in the south will support secession from the Republic, the possibility of a civil war should not be overlooked and be taken lightly.
Im hoping this will not happen. The next few weeks will be crucial for our country. Lets hope we survive this test of time.
